Emergency crews are on stand-by across Sydney tonight as storms approach the coast.

The Weather Bureau says thunderstorms and high winds will reach the east coast later tonight.

The dust storms have also swept across Mount Kosciuszko, turning the snow orange.

Winds blowing in excess of 100 kilometres per hour have already ripped through several towns including Broken Hill, Hay and Griffith.The SES had to dig Scarva out----

The State Emergency Service (SES) has received dozens of call-outs for fallen trees and damaged roofs.

The winds whipped up a large dust storm that blanketed the region.

Hay resident David Houston says it is the worst dust storm he has seen in more than 40 years.

"[It] just went completely black and blew like hell," he said.

The rain followed the dust, causing mud rain.


Orange snow

The red soil is being swept from the western plains into the upper atmosphere and being dropped on the Snowy Mountains.

Thredbo's Darren Nielsen says he has never seen anything like it.

"Extremely bizarre ... Seeing the sky and the just the whole village in darkness and the mountain orange is a really eerie sort of feeling," he said.
