JFE Steel's unit JFE Shoji Trade Corp.

JFE Steel spent about 50 billion yen last year to take a 20 percent stake in a Queensland coal-mining project slated to begin shipments in 2013, the Nikkei said.

Rival firm Nippon Steel Corp (5401.T: Quote) has secured mining interests in Queensland as well, according to the daily.
