No preferential treatment Shares, just civil treatment as is required under international law.
This issue was never a problem before Howard. Both parties worked through common ground behind closed doors and came up with an acceptable policy. No drama. The country was united all through that period of Vietnam refugees, and other high and low intake periods.
All this changed with Howards policising the issue and the "labor are soft on boat people" mantra.A history of bipartisanship thrown away for political points.
Now both parties need to get back in line.
The treatment of a person as a "refugee" should not be contingent on his ability to aquire a visitors visa.More specific his capacity to get a visitors visa should not determine if we treat him as "criminal".Its not the back door or the front door, its just a different door.
