Kevin's problem, up to the election, is the Sussex Street union power brokers because they only approve of brown nosing ex-unionists and, Kevin is not one of those and, in fact, Kevin has been quite critical of the interference by the faceless men.

The Sussex Street union power brokers threaten the normal brown nosing ex-unionists, if they don't toe the union line, with losing pre-selection at the next election. This is precisely what they did for the leader vote today.

So, Kevin, as a back bencher can only do what he has been doing - slowly whiteant Miss Gillard to try to keep the polls around 30%. This will deter any new leader challenges and will guarantee Miss Gillard leads the ALP to certain destruction at the next election.

Because Kevin is unlikely to win the support of the Sussex Street union power brokers there is not much point in Kevin trying to contest the leadership before the election.

However, it is certainly worthwhile for Kevin to keep Miss Gillard as "leader" until the election as this will guarantee a massive loss to the ALP and will reduce the power of the Sussex Street union power brokers so it will be easier for Kevin to step up as the public approved savior of the ALP.
