I suppose the Leopard was elevated to the level of a clasic in the same manner Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird achieved such fame.
But beyond the aristrocrats and their luxury existed a violent world where regular uprisings occurred when starving peasants rioted.
They got to the point where they had nothing to lose and even though rebellions and especially leaders were dealt with harshly they continued to occur when crops failed or when landlords got so greedy the peasants revolted.
The barbarious rule of the Spanish Bourbons who were mostly absent rulers created the enforcement group known as the **lierati.
These mercenaries kept the peasants in check but they soon realized instead of being enforcers for absent landlords they could take over the lands and so was born an insidious criminal Mafia that has plagued the Island for close to two hundred years.
