@RedCedar from my scant reading of Italian history (I probably know more about ancient Rome than any modern European country . . . except what is common knowledge) I realise there is a violent past, in parts, particularly in Sicily, which they exported to America and also worldwide (Mafia). We know all about the modern fights against the Mafia - and it makes one wonder if they haven't also, like so many other crims, taken to the internet to commit their crimes.
Enough of that, the Netflix movie is worth watching - the producers and all involved went to no end of trouble getting the 'period' clothing, styles, wonderful architecture, manners and mannerisms of the rich and also the abject, humiliating behaviour of the poor before the rich etc. right, There were even some Viennese waltzes being danced perfectly (at a ball up north, of course - and it was, when Strauss was alive and fashionable), by, of course, the Prince dancing with the most beautiful woman (who is a beauty in the film) - we do not see his unmarried daughter as elderly, as in the book, it finishes with the Gattopardo's death.
(I have taken to calling my Lilycat 'Gatto' . . . will recommend this to Italian friends of my daughter's.)
My husband built me a house, which had 15 arches, which he built - wasn't a builder by profession, but had a leaning towards architecture, had a smidgeon of Italian but mostly Austro-Hungarian in him. The house no longer exists, a later owner subdivided 'the block' again and built a modern cube onto it and slipped a tiny house at the bottom in. But I don't live in the past, but re-live it a little when i see beautiful houses like in this movie.
Thanks again
Ciao
