Others will be able to tell you about fundamentals - it's not my thing. But a high level of institutional holding is a good sign.
I trade using technicals (chart patterns) rather than fundamentals. One very basic metric is to look at companies with good daily turnover, above their 200 day moving average.
Here's a list of ASX gold stocks. I ranked them according to 4 factors: 100 day ROC, $-turnover, volatility, and 50 day ROC. The 3rd column has the highest weighting, then turnover, volatility, etc. There are some juniors among them. SVY is not on the list because it has very low turnover.
