zipperlip, you are getting a lot of advice here (and some of it may get your wife, not the writers, in trouble).
One principle that often works (in life and in cases such as yours):
When all else fails (or seems problematic), be Honest!
So, I suggest write and honestly explain circumstances and responsibilities, and ask to be excused (until kids get to say high school age).
