    LNG trains earthworks begin

WORKS have started on the first of Gladstone's new LNG trains.

Ground improvement and earthmoving works began on Monday for LNG Limited's site at Fisherman's Landing.

Perth-based LNG Limited managing director Maurice Brand said earthworks equipment was on site to prepare for construction.

“We've got graders and tractors there getting site levels for the LNG tank train,” Mr Brand said this week.

He expected preparation works to last until Christmas, with early works starting in January.

The start of the ground work is one in a number of acceptances the Fisherman's Landing-based LNG site has received.

The commencement of works has taken place on schedule and follows Gladstone Ports Cor- poration approval of the pro- ject's Quantitative Risk Assessment.

The LNG Limited managing director said the location of the Gladstone plant offered “natural advantages” for an earlier construction.

“A lot of the other projects are on Curtis Island and probably need larger infrastructure.”

He also said the early con- struction of the LNG site will provide some early experience for the port with dealing with LNG ships.

Other recent developments with the Gladstone project include the lodgement of foundation material at the location for the proposed second LNG train; confirmation the price is in line with expectations.

Another significant component of the project is the pipeline of coal-seam gas to Gladstone from the Bowen, Surat and Galilee basins.

Mr Brand said Arrow Energy would provide the pipeline and was “confident” they “can provide the gas”.

Gladstone LNG is set to be the first project to export CSG-LNG and is aiming to commence exports in 2012.
