.... Why can't REA's just put a price range?

I've found most properties without a listing price to be overpriced.

You call to get a price and they come at you with their sales pitch, and fifty questions about your financial situation.

Ripper today:

Me: How much?

REA: What is your budget?

Me: None of your business? How much?

REA: We're just seeking expressions of interest at the moment.

Me: Thanks, I just lost interest.
