Ranges suck. There doesn't have to be ranges. It's like ads on gum-tree, or cars, a single price but negotiations still happen. Ranges are probably training wheels for negotiators still in numpty school. I don't believe there used to be ranges, but not sure.
Imo ranges serve agents rather than vendors and clients. It psychologically prepares vendors to accept the bottom end, long before offers are even received. If ranges didn't serve agents, they wouldn't be used. It's all about tactics for scum-of-the-earth sales reps, leave alone 1% good ones.
