Nice post on the Kunioon mine proposal and Tarong power supply. The link above is to a 6 August 2010 public notice from DERM the the Terms of Reference for the EIS for the Kunioon mine have been finalized.

The politics of the (Queensland gov.) sunk cost in obtaining and scoping the Kunioon coal reseave on thousands of hectares of lower value general cropping land vs. buying Syngas from an upstart UCG company taking up several hectares of good red peanut country would be interesting.

Tarong Power's website states that the Meandu mine will supply coal for the power station until 2025, deferring requirement for Kunioon until around then. The notice from Tarong below still emphasises the need to mine Kunioon at some stage in the medium future.http://www.tarongenergy.com.au/Whatwedo/Mining/KunioonCoalResource/tabid/98/Default.aspx

The Kunioon mineral development licence area is immediately south of the Cougar tenement and abuts Cougar's lease.

Kunioon Coal ResourceTarong Energy announced its decision in September 2007 to purchase Meandu Mine and the Kunioon coal resource as the long-term fuel supply for the Tarong and Tarong North Power Stations.

The Kunioon coal resource is approximately 12 kilometres south of Kingaroy, 10 kilometres west of Nanango, and 15 kilometres north-west of the power stations.

At the time of the decision, it was intended to transition from Meandu to Kunioon in 2012. Since taking ownership of Meandu Mine, Tarong Energy has confirmed the existence of additional economically-viable coal.

With Meandu Mine now capable of providing a fuel supply for the power stations until at least 2025, Tarong Energy has chosen to defer the proposed transition to Kunioon.

This additional coal at Meandu Mine ensures the ongoing security of Tarong Energys operations in the region, which contributes over 1,200 full-time equivalent jobs and one third of gross regional product to the South Burnett.

It is important to note that the Kunioon coal resource remains a vital part of Tarong Energy's long-term fuel requirements.

Tarong Energy values its place in the local community and will continue to provide information about the progress of the Meandu-Kunioon fuel strategy.
