I have been searching around for anything I can find on the current tax issues. I have even sent an email to the Zambian government 'contact us' website. While on the website, I found this under - economy, mining. No other companies were on there.
The re-opening of the Luanshya Copper Mines has brought life back to the town. The opening of Kansanshi mine in the North-Western Province as well as the coming into operation of the Lumwana project will change the economic landscape of the North-Western province.
With regard to Lumwana, negotiations for the development agreement were concluded and the agreement signed with equinox copper ventures limited on 16th December, 2005. Production is expected to commence in the year 2007. Once operational, Lumwana mines is estimated to produce about 140,000 metric tonnes of copper and create over 2,500 new jobs. The new mine will bring about development of infrastructure similar to that found on the Copperbelt. These positive developments in the mining industry have given impetus towards fresh explorations and prospecting for minerals in the country. There are already promising deposits of Copper, Gold, Nickle and Diamonds. There is no doubt that ZAM country has a bright future in as far as mining is concerned.
So it does look like EQN is a good corporate citizen and fingers crossed they keep the DA.
