Thorium (look it up) is an excellent alternative accept you can't enrich it to make weapon-grade matter therefore it'll never take off.

Let's remember that countries need to maintain power not just in their grids but also in their nation's security. There is no better alternative that manages to accomplish both. Long term holders of uranium will be enrichely (no pun intended) rewarded.
