Annually, about 17 billion litres of petrol is sold in Australia. The current rate of excise is 39.5 cents per litre. Given that, the Guvinment collects about 6.7 billion dollars. If you add another fiddy cents, that's another 8.5 billion in the kitty. Serious money methinks.
