I don't think for a second he doesn't 'want' it to succeed. However I'm not sure he 'thinks', or ever 'thought' it would succeed. In my opinion this is the reason he has paid himself so well. 'Make hay while the sun shines.' He hasn't demonstrated any real confidence in the company by actions.
