I agree what you say about the long term buy. But I think what is being overlooked is that a shareholder's ability to react in the shortime and medium term is also being curtailed by the actions of the JP Morgans etc. I will give you an example. It used to be a case that because of the 'leaky boat syndrome' if a share dropped/ rose quickly in value a shareholder could have some warning of negative/positive changes in his shares. But because market manipulations ( I made copies last week of trades in a few stocks when they were forcing the shares down It was blatent and amazing in its arrogance)are so prevalant a share price is becoming not a good indicator of worth. Just waiting for the 'big boys' of town to force the price up to its value is a preety impoverished way for small shareholders to invest, we only get tin at the close as it were.
