Perhaps we should focus our attention at home more:
Kirby criticises local media for US focus
The High Court Judge, Justice Michael Kirby, says people are more interested in the coverage of overseas court cases than decisions handed down by Australian courts.
Justice Kirby is in Lismore on the New South Wales north coast this weekend where he addressed law and multi-media graduates at Southern Cross University.
He also said the decisions of the Rugby League Judiciary received more coverage in the media than decisions handed down by the nation's highest court.
Justice Kirby said important decisions of the High Court sink without trace as media outlets concentrate on overseas events:
"Last year, the American trial of Timothy McVeigh attracted hugely more attention in the Australian media than any of the decisions of our courts, including the High Court," he said.
"The global dimension of multimedia and information technology has meant that, in large part, we have become part of the media of the United States. We should resist this tendency."
