Religions risk mutual extinction: Justice Kirby
Posted 37 minutes ago
One of Australia's High Court judges says religious faiths should learn from each other or risk "mutual extinction".
During a public lecture at Griffith University in Brisbane last night, Justice Michael Kirby said Australians were "growing up" and the nation had thrown off the Protestant-Catholic sectarianism of his youth.
But he urged greater understanding between faiths, saying the alternative was the risk of "mutual extinction".
Justice Kirby also said Australia needed Islamic friends who would stand shoulder to shoulder in advocating fundamental rights for all, including women, gays and other minorities.
