the critical part where the winning blow was dealt to him - he's hurt, he's badly hurt, he's probably so hurt that there's no coming back from it

he's like a runner who has been in front in a race and has blown out a hammy or something - he's irreparably injured - so he's going backwards in the field
screaming in pain
