Wouldn't they just print US$ and convert them to the currency they need to pay in the same as we do when we want to travel.

I used to worry about loading the grandkids up with a heap of interest payments until I read the Reserve banks balance sheet and saw that they have a liability to printed money which they don't owe to anyone and don't pay interest on.

The governments own the reserve banks. The banks print money and buy Government bonds . The interest the government pays goes to profit the profit is returned to the government as dividends. A perfect example of a zero sum game.

The only risk is printing money can cause inflation and how good is inflation at multi bagging valuations.
