I reckon we're seeing more of the same.
It's a bit of populism which seems to be increasing.
The government wasn't interested in doing too much about this but public pressure has made them alter their response. They will never admit they were wrong. They'll just waffle on until a new issue takes the focus off this one.
Covid has been a great distraction for them for months. Now that is getting less media, other issues will get more sunlight.
The only trouble with populism is that you probably won't achieve great reforms in steps like the old days. When political parties stood on firm principles.
That said, this is the power of the people somewhat effecting change. I don't think that's a bad thing. Just a bit frustrating.
