Kawasaki Heavy Industries is working on a project in Latrobe Valley on the southern tip of Australia to produce hydrogen fuel at low costs and transport it to Japan. The company plans to produce hydrogen fuel using lignite, also known as brown coal. Prices for lignite are a tenth of those for ordinary coal.
The heavy machinery maker plans to transport hydrogen fuel to Japan on a special ship after liquefying the gas by chilling it to minus 253 C. A test plant for the project is scheduled to go online in Australia as early as 2017. Kawasaki Heavy Industries will start talks soon with local authorities on the site for the plant.
