Read the company reports carefully - especially the auditor's reports - comparing them from year to year as one can then check what the company says it will do against what it might actually get done in the following report; also subtle changes in an auditor's report from one year to the next can be a real red flag.
Immunise yourselves against Pinch of the Proverbial Publishing, the Motley Knave, financial journalists generally, those who talk about "clean" balance sheets in particular, and smiling directors with 60^{th} gold bars, then without much luck at all, rags will turn to the possibility of riches.
