I'm aware of this figure too, but it's widely considered the number has been exaggerated. $17.6B is the total value of the orders placed on that day, but huge amount hasn't been eventually fulfilled due to various reasons, some even involving cheating orders by the retailers themselves. I found a study from third party source claiming the total sales are worth about $9B, and this number makes more sense given Tmalls $26B achievement in 11/11.
