For comparative purposes, yes you do...the closing price is the price used by any rational person. Not sure why you mention the close on 4th Oct...it vwouldn't be to suit your argument would it? Why not look at the close on 14th October? ie 4275.
As I said before, you can use historical indices to prove anything you want.
All this is because you and your mate stated that CBS had been left behind in the "mega" recovery witnessed by the market over the last 6 months. Not a great argument really. And I'm not abusing you, I'm just stating facts.
