You forget SP the Labor government was not on the nose as it held a vote according to the polls that was higher than Labors vote at the 2007 election. I suspect that Kevin may have pushed too hard on the Mining tax issue and may not have wanted to amend it. Labor probbably saw that approach as their Achilles heel and handed the task over to Julia Gillard who was willing to negotiate. So lets not kid ourselves, the Labor Government was very very popular until they deferred the ETS that saw votes move to the Greens and the mining tax was IMO the nail in the coffin for Kevin Rudd as leader.
Julia Gillard as new PM negotiated a new MRRT and diffused the issue. How the broad electorate sees the outcome will be decided tomorrow. It will be close but I think the undecideds may swing it for the government. If not the Coalition will win and thats fine because in our democracy the will of the people within our democratic system must prevail.
