A lot of Australians believe what he says such as the GST scare. Same happened with workchoices.
It's just a mentality thing. A lot seem to forget what happened 6/12 months ago and decide on what they hear in the week or 2 leading into the actual election.
Though change is in, same when Howard was booted, just for the sake of change lol.
