SK Innovation's partnership with VW has European cell facilities on the cards:

OCT 27 2018 - Volkswagen will clone the Tesla-Panasonic gigafactory approach?
"According to Germany’s Manager Magazin, Volkswagen is in negotiations with SK Innovation to build a battery gigafactory in Europe."
Here's VW CEO, Herber Diess a week ago:
"We have different possibilities under review to enter the cell manufacturing...Together with SKI we feel confident that we are able to invest in new cells, there is a great openness for a collaboration"
VW's investments in JV's for cell manufacture will require underpinning with raw material contracts either directly or via partner deals with miners. Few recent ones include Tesla signing up with Gangfeng and Kidman for lithium, BMW also with Gangfeng for lithium and SK Innovation with AUZ for cobalt. Part of reason VW going with SKI due to non DRC cobalt supply and pretty sure VW will also dictate graphite supply from as green a source as possible.
Expect to see similar deals for spherical graphite to support cell manufacture in Europe and KNL well positioned with Christoph Frey in Germany to supply non-Chinese eco-friendly product.
