SEVENTEEN miners are trapped underground in a Polish copper mine after an earthquake caused a cave-in, according to media reports.
A spokesman for mine operator KGHM told media the miners were trapped 600 metres below ground at the Rudna mine, about 400 km southwest of Warsaw.
The earthquake measured 4.7 on the Richter scale.
Mine spokesman Dariusz Wyborski confirmed there was a quake which caused the cave-in.
''The rescue operation is difficult because huge amounts of rocks have to be removed,'' he said.
