I think you are incorrect about them being so stupid they threw out their supposed anti terrorist western friends. I and others here contend they were behind the terrorism, ISIS and Al-Qaeda are western fronts for terrorism, I believe they were right to throw them out. These groups could not exist unless they were supported by the US. There was a zero hedge story last week, it does support the view.
