The US military industrial complex, of which Australia is a new up and coming franchisee, always needs a destabilised geopolitical scene or enemy to keep sales of weaponry moving. No point building the stuff if there is no market and taxpayers in most countries aren't want to prioritise military spending over social services so they need fear to prompt them.
