"SAS candidates are selected from across the forces using a filter system where a touch of psychopath a sprinkle of authoritarianism seems to go a long way in qualifying."
I just don't know about the Aussie SAS but the US Special Forces guys I've seen in videos, often in roles not related to their past lives, have been the complete opposite of that description. Highly competent, tough as nails to endure, but empathetic and overly aware of their position in a situation and adept at using it to move a group in the best direction without being authoritarian. They have surprised me as I naturally expected chestbeaters.
The one US Special Forces (ex-Laos in the 60's) guy I briefly knew was the nicest humble bloke. I've always thought ours would be much the same.
