The bottom line here is that conventional armed forces do not have the ability to win a guerrilla war.
That was so in Vietnam and now in the M/E.& in NI at the height of the "Troubles"
Perhaps now is an appropriate time to have a rethink about sending troops overseas
unless Australian security is threatened by our immediate neighbours or in our immediate neighbourhood.
We have had enormous casualties from Vietnam and now the M/E which is costing the taxpayer
over $12 billion a year. This debacle will only encourage militant Muslims in Indonesia & Malaysia
to retaliate at a time when we should be attempting to placate Muslim fears.
I note with interest that the current head of the Army and the then overall Aussie commander
in Afghanistan said that he did not
see anything untoward on his watch.
Of course the issue is not one of what he saw but one of what/when he knew or as commander
what he ought to have known.
IMO the planting of phones/radios on dead unarmed bodies was a dispicable act if we are to believe
the ex-SAS intelligence officer witness.
We sent troops to Vietnam and then we cribbed about taking Vietnamese refugees
We sent troops to the former Yugoslavia and then we cribbed about taking Yugoslav refugees
We sent troops to Iraq and then we cribbed about taking Iraqui refugees
We sent troops to Afghanistan and we cribbed about taking Afghani refugees
We sent troops to Syria and we cribbed about taking Syrian refugees
