It’s simple: Our Good Guys can kill their bad guys trying to kill our good guys in battle, but if our good guys capture any of their bad guys in battle, our good guys can’t kill those bad guys anymore, because they can no longer kill our good guys, who are now their bad guy prisoners of war. If a few of our good guys kill their bad guy prisoners of war, some of our good guys are no better than their bad guys.
I do not feel particularly good about those of our good guys gone bad. But do I need to feel bad for any of their bad guys who got killed, whether they got killed by our good guys in battle or killed by our good guys gone bad as prisoners of war? Negative.
