I agree. He straddles two worlds and is uniquely placed to show some leadership. Does he have to the courage to speak truth to power when he is part of the power structure or does he just reserve that for criticism of China. Governments and the media prefer to sanitise our wars but this is the reality of these kind of conflicts. We saw it in Vietnam and everywhere else how rules go out the window when the lines of war blur. But they sanitise it to maintain the myth of chivalry and a public who will accept using our troops in ill-advised ventures.
