One of our customers has been asked by the Kids Cancer Council, a charity, to find 40 mobiles with $20 prepaid sims to give away to Children with Cancer, in this case the oncology unit at Westmead Hospital in Sydney . All this before xmas. The unit and charity will support the donation with Media exposure, a tax deductible receipt and the press on the day. Let me know if you can assist.

    In Pursuit of a Cure…
    Our Proud Heritage

The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children has been caring for sick children and their families since 1880. We are proud to have served for more than 100 years at our previous site, at Camperdown.
    The Children’s Hospital at Westmead

In 1995, the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children moved from Camperdown to our current site at Westmead with a new 350-bed facility. We were known as the New Children’s Hospital. After 5 years and firmly established at Westmead, the Hospital is not really “new any more, so now we are called The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

    Our Vision

More than just a hospital, we are committed to providing children with the best medical care and personal support, as well as an environment in which total healing can take place. To do this, art, gardens, entertainment and educational programs feature prominently in our treatment regimes.

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead continues to actively promote the interests and needs of all children and educate and inform the community about good health and injury prevention.

    The Oncology (cancer) Unit

We are the largest children’s cancer unit in NSW. Since 1976, over 2500 children with cancer have received treatment at the Oncology Unit and more than 1700 of these are long-term survivors. Between 150-200 new children with cancer are referred to the Oncology Unit each year. Since our move to Westmead, we have experienced a large increase in patient referrals as we are located in the centre of the largest concentration of children in Australia .

    We’re aiming to cure…

As recently as 30 years ago most children with cancer or leukaemia died. Today, because of research, which has led to much better treatment, the overall cure rate for childhood cancer is 75%. This means that three out of every four children with cancer are cured, permanently.

The Oncology Research Unit – saving children’s lives

The Oncology Research Unit was opened at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in July 1997 under the direction of Professor Peter Gunning.

Unlocking the secrets of the cancer cell

Cancer cells develop from normal cells when they no longer respond to signals from body tissues to stop growing. Professor Gunning and his team of about 20 researchers are respected internationally as leaders in understanding how the internal structure of cells controls their behaviour.

The Oncology Research Unit uses this knowledge to examine cancer cells and establish how they begin to grow and spread.

Tumour Banking on the Web – a world first!

The Oncology Research Unit have established a paediatric tumour bank, which processes, catalogues and stores specimens of childhood cancer tissue, to assist research. This is the first tumour bank in Australia to which researchers anywhere can apply for specimens for their own research, and the only one anywhere in the world to date which can be accessed for this purpose by researchers worldwide via the Internet.

From the Laboratory to the bedside
Professor Gunning and his co-workers are also studying methods for improving cancer treatment. The area of gene therapy, explored in conjunction with the Gene Therapy Research Unit offers an exciting promise of entirely new therapeutic strategies for 21st century medicine. These new approaches will have special relevance to the treatment of childhood cancer.

    Fast facts

    · The Oncology Unit at CHW is the largest childhood cancer unit in NSW. Each year we see 120-150 new patients (out of approx. 200 diagnosed each year)

    · At any one time there are usually about 250 kids on treatment coming to the Oncology Treatment Centre for chemotherapy

    · We have treated over 2,500 kids in the last 25 years. More than 1700 of these are alive and well.

    · The cure rate today is 75% - that means 3 out of 4 kids diagnosed will be permanently cured. Thirty years ago only about 30% survived.

    · The Oncology Unit also operates a Long-term Survivors Clinic. More than 700 survivors are followed up. The goal is that they become responsible for their own follow-up and management over the years

    · About 25-30 Bone Marrow Transplants are performed each year. Only patients with the most serious forms of cancer require a BMT
