I have a 3.5 year old boy and he can be so frustrating. We haven't had the spitting one yet but I guess it'll come. He was biting and that passed. He delights in tormenting his sister. Does it for attention - any attention.
I guess it's not much different to me when I bait my wife for a giggle.
We used to do a lot of time-outs when they were smaller but my favourite is now the old , "I'm going to count to three". Usually I can find something to take away if I reach 3 ...dessert or similar.

You are not alone! The great part about kids annoying behaviour is that even if you don't find an effective strategy to combat them, they usually grow out of a lot 'em... Unfortunately my wife is stuck with my annoying habits.
