re: what's the next move for this one? Queensland first: Town of Windorah goes solar
Thursday 15 December 2005
The tiny town of Windorah is set to make the sunshine one of its most powerful assets after the completion of a project which will be a first for Queensland John Mickel, the Queensland Energy Minister, announced today.
By the end of 2007 the Barcoo Shire township (whose official population is 96) will be able to produce 100 per cent of its daytime power needs from solar power.
Mr Mickel said Ergon Energy's Windorah solar farm will use new solar technology in a trial of alternative electricity production for remote communities.
"Normally Windorah's electricity is supplied by a diesel-powered generating station on the outskirts of the town which consumes about 240,000 litres of diesel a year," he said. "The solar farm could save up to 100,000 litres of fuel a year."
