I am surprised that no information has been released by ALD on the impact (or not) of the king tides last week (see below, dated 11/12) and that its not a subject of discussion in this forum. My information, extremely 2nd hand, is that Barick exploration and the Simberi Is production have not been affected, but that local peoples have at least been displaced....add this to the article below: -------------
More than 50 homes in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland and Manus Provinces were swept away yesterday by a so-called “king tide,” the Post-Courier reports.
The unusual high tide has caused extensive damage along the New Ireland coastline, where more than 50 homes and a health center were washed away.
The affected areas include Bol, Konos, Bulu, Bungbue, Kalangan and Silom villages. The newspaper says Namatanai and Tench islanders in the Mussau group were standing knee-deep in sea water. Six homes on Manus were reported destroyed.
“As of this morning (yesterday) we do know that the sea level rose 1.0m to 1.5m and reached up to 10m inland,” New Ireland disaster officer co-coordinator Elsie Wambun told the Post-Courier. “We are still yet to confirm reports around the Tabar, Anir, Simberi, Lihir, Tanga, New Hanover and big Mussau Island communities as well.”
She said the provincial government and National Disaster Office are sending teams to the affected areas to assess the damage.
