Try the aussie dollar, and economic situation generally. I have been going there for many years, and in that period our dollar has been as high as $NZ1.70, and back near par. A huge opportunity in itself.
Also, New Zealand has been doing much better financially than Australia. I think its called following the money. I think that only a small amount of the cross-Tasman traffic has anything to do with welfare, and more about opportunity and business. Compare Air new Zealand and Qantas, - says it all really.
