The EU and the United States support the Lobito Corridor in the DRC

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Communication Channels and Accessibility, Jean-Pierre Bemba, received the European Union Ambassador to the DRC, Nicolas Berlanga Martinez, and the United States Ambassador, Lucy Tamlyn, in Kinshasa on Monday, May 26, 2025.

Discussions focused on the progress of the Lobito Corridor project, a strategic infrastructure for regional integration and economic development in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

During this meeting, the two diplomats welcomed the progress made and expressed the renewed support of the European Union and the United States government for this major initiative.

This project aims to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the continent's interior through a modernized rail network.

"Progress is tangible. In a project of this magnitude, the time factor must be kept in perspective.

Our joint presence aims to reaffirm our commitment alongside the Congolese government,” declared Nicolas Berlanga Martinez.

He also emphasized the importance of ensuring a stable financing framework, mentioning ongoing discussions between Congolese authorities and international financial institutions.

A new meeting on this subject is scheduled for June 17.

Mr. Berlanga Martinez highlighted the strategic importance of the corridor, which goes beyond the simple transport of minerals:

“This project also encompasses agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and connectivity.

It represents a unique opportunity for integrated development in the region.”

The Lobito Corridor is part of a dynamic international cooperation aimed at strengthening regional economic integration, stimulating private investment, and creating sustainable jobs across Central Africa.

This project represents not only a major economic challenge, but also an opportunity for the DRC to assert itself as a key player in the region's connectivity.
