    One thing that I perhaps didn't explain properly was the significance of komatite itself. It's not a rock that 'might' contain nickel. As pointed out on another thread (from wikipedia) by definition it must contain nickel or it's not komatite.

    One of classification criteria for komatite is greater than 400ppm Ni. And this is from the primary magma i.e. the evenly mixed liquid. So that's minimum 400pm across the whole komatite structure. To make it economic it needs to be concentrated by the sulfidation process I described above. So then the key question is whether there is sulfur present to enable that process. That's why I pointed out the significance of disseminated sulfides as a marker and the fact that the area is in a greenstone belt with green stone being a sulfur bearing host rock. If you've got komatite and you've got sulfur it not question if there's sulfides it a question of where they are.
