I don't think anyone is implying that Vodafone would use another piece of communications hardware. It makes sense for Vodafone to push the MachineLink product because it may encourage the client to stick with Vodafone rather than switch to another network operator.
There is nothing stopping Kone implementing their own communications equipment into the elevator and just using the Vodafone SIM. Given that every elevator already has some sort of telephone/communication device, it is possible that Kone will simply modify their equipment to use cellular technology rather than today's fixed line technology.
I have contacted Vodafone and Ken Sheridan and didn't get any further information.
The only positive I can see for NTC is that it is more than likely that Kone would need to certify their communications equipment for use on the Vodafone network. This may discourage them from building their own communications equipment and just take up Vodafone's MachineLink.
