The Kowalik-1H spudded on 18 July 2008 and reached a measured total depth (TD) of 16,483 feet on 19 October. During the drilling of the approximately 4,600 foot lateral within the upper Austin Chalk several gas flares were noted. Gas readings were consistently higher than 2,000 units.
The well was completed with uncemented pre-slotted liner for a production test, and on 4 November, the well flowed at an unstimulated rate to sales of approximately 1 million cubic feet of gas per day, 320 barrels of oil per day and 14 barrels of water per day.
Cleanout operations were carried out on two occasions in an attempt to clean up the well and by mid-February the well was flowing at a rate of 107 barrels of oil per day plus 333,000 cubic feet of gas per day.
Given the quality and persistence of the gas shows encountered while drilling this well, flow rates from the well are significantly lower than anticipated by the Operator with possible explanations being near well-bore reservoir damage and/or fracture blockages introduced during the drilling or completion of the well.
