FWIW breakouts can certainly be predicted on charts, I do it on a daily basis. Long before news is dropped.
The chart is a visual representation of the trading action and a solid understanding of charting patterns can tell you when a stock is looking to breakout or down.
Not to mention down in the speculative end of the market where news flow is commonly leaked. If you wait until an announcement has dropped to enter, you'll typically get smashed by those who have bought the rumour and are now selling the fact into you.
