Nigeria: No Mining Licences Revoked, Says Minister

After weeks of speculations on the revocaion of 1,00 mining licences, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Chief Sarafa Tunji Isola, finally told members of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ABUCCIMA) who paid him a courtesy visit at the weekend that they were not withdrawn.
A statement from Mr. Clinton A. Oni, the minister's Chief Press Secretary said Isola made the clarification to "correct erroneous reports" in the media purporting the revocation of 1002 Mining Licences by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.

According to him, the Minister explained that if there was any need to revoke any Mining Licence, it would be done through due process in line with relevant laws.
A memo titled, "Operations of the MCO" dated 26 November 2007 and signed by Patrick H. Iwara, Ag. Permanebt Secretary, copied to the Minister and the Minister of State in the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, said: "All current Mineral Titles already issued by the MCO (Mining Cadastre Office) shall be recalled and reviewed before reissuance on behalf of the Honourable Minister.


It added: "Further issuance of new Titles have been suspended forthwith until all issues are resolved.
Consequently, the DG (MCO) is requested to immediately (underlined) put the necessary machinery in place to implement paragraphs (ii) (iii) and (iv) above and inform the Honourable Minister accordingly."
But the Minister disclosed during the meeting with the ABUCCIMA officials that the Ministry had set up a machinery in place to address the issue of revalidation of Mining Titles to put things in proper perspectives as regards Mining in the country.
