Kupe Field - One of New Zealand’s most important offshore oil and gas ventures which provides 15% of New Zealand’s gas consumption, has kept our subsidiary Wendell busy providing a range of support services. Wendell provided a full range of shore based services, the pipeline lay logistics from platform to shore, purchasing and logistics on the Kupe wellhead platform as well as catering services to the rig.
New Zealand Oil & Gas (NZOG) says gas production at the Kupe field off the coast of Taranaki will start in the last quarter of 2009.
Origin Energy, which operates the Kupe project, says the overall project is nearly finished although completion will be later than planned.
However, Origin Energy says capital costs remain in line with expectations.
The Kupe project was announced three years ago and drilling began in December 2007. The field was first discovered 20 years ago but high development costs meant it was left untapped until now.
Over the next 15 to 20 years Kupe is expected to meet around 15% of New Zealand's yearly gas demand and 50% of the country's LPG demand.
