The Council of the Republic, that met on Wednesday under the chairmanship of president Jose Eduardo dos Santos, recommended by unanimity that the legislative election should take place in 2008 and the presidential poll in the following year.

Angola proposes polls in 2008 and 2009

On December 20, the Council of the Republic under the chairmanship of President Jose Eduardo dos SANTOS proposed that legislative elections take place in 2008 and a presidential vote in 2009. The proposal delays the timeframe for elections following a 27-year civil war that ended in 2002. Previously, elections were expected to take place in 2006/2007. The Council's suggestion will now be forwarded to the Cabinet for approval.
