Kyushu Electric to restart reactor in southwestern Japan on Aug. 11

Kyushu Electric Power Co. is in final preparations to restart a reactor in southwestern Japan on Aug. 11, making it the first utility in the country to do so under more stringent safety standards implemented after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, sources close to the matter said Thursday.
The No. 1 reactor at the utility's Sendai Nuclear Power Station in Kagoshima Prefecture will be reactivated after clearing inspection of control rods, which have been suppressing nuclear fission, on Aug. 10 by pulling them out the following day, they said.
The resumption of the reactor, one of the two at the Sendai plant, will mark the restart of nuclear power generation in the country, which has been at a standstill due to safety concerns following the Fukushima disaster triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami.
